0 Popular Blogging Tips That Don't Always Work

Blogging Tips

Most bloggers, when they start blogging, search Google for 'blogging tips' or 'increasing blog traffic' at one point or another in their life. For most, its when they publish their first post (or thereabouts), and decide to create an awesome blog in the near future by following the best advice on the internet. And while searching for advice, they come across some really common and popular tips that everyone seems to be talking about.

But the logical question is, if those tips are so 'award-winning' or efficient, then why isn't every other blog getting popular? Well, the simple fact of the matter is, while they might be great tips, they don't always work, or work in a way that you might think. Here are a few well known blogging tips that need some consideration before implementation.

Creating controversy

Yesterday, in our list of 10 Whitehat Blogging tips, we talked about creating controversy. Here, I want to explain it a bit more. We discussed how controversy can light a spark and start the conversation. Controversy is also a good way to start some buzz, and become viral. That is the theory, at least.

In practice, well, you all know how heated discussions can become on the internet. And even if you talk about something that's not controversial, sometimes, there's going to be someone who comes along the way and negates what you just said (rather rudely, I might add in light of recent events). And for controversial topics, well, multiple the consequences by any integer you like, and the result will always be worse.

Creating controversy
If you create controversy online, you must have some really solid points to support your claim. Otherwise, someone with better arguments might come along, and convince your readers that you're wrong, which can be an embarrassing situation. So to avoid this, it's best if you look at something from a certain angle. For example, the all-time-hot debate about iPhone vs Android will probably never conclude. But you can pick a certain aspect, such as availablity and open source, and argue that Android is better in that regard.

Is holding competitions worth it?

Let's face it; for new blogs with little audience, holding competitions with a prize at the end just makes you look stupid. I can relate from another blogger's example, who held a competition, but so few people participated that the prize had to be given to a candidate selected from a total of 4 participants. It all made it look like a joke. So for beginners, this strategy does not work, as it involves effort on the part of readers, which they are unwilling to do.
Hold Competitions
A better approach is a give-away or an exchange program. You can use social media to raise awareness, and then invite people for the event. I will relate to an example here. Syed Faizan Ali, a dear follower and a dedicated blogger created a group on Facebook and held exchange programs for Tweets, Google +1's, comments, and Facebook Likes, etc. That way, those who participate like others' content and comment on it, and then get likes and comments in return. Creating such promotions is a better way to increase your readership.

Commenting on other blogs

The blogosphere is increasingly getting busier. And let's face it, not everyone has the time to read comments on other blogs, and reply to them or follow the link. A lot of people get out soon after submitting their comment, and possibly never comeback unless pinged by a reply email. in such circumstances, leaving your comments all over the internet can prove to be just a waste of your time.

Commenting

The best way to utilize your time is to post relevant comments on posts that are popular, and where the're's a conversation already going on. Join in, and express your views. People will then relate to you and follow you. Also, it'd be a good idea to monitor what site is giving you most benefits for commenting, such as traffic and readership, and spend more of your time commenting on that website.

Content is king?

How many times have you heard that phrase now? I won't say it's an incorrect notion, but there's something else we need to think about. Creating quality content takes a lot of time and effort. But you see, anyone can work hard. The real thing is to direct that hard work towards where it's needed the most. It's like working as a laborer, or as a supervisor. You need to optimize the work process, such that you work hard creating content that your audience can really benefit from. If they can't, then there's no real worth of your quality content.

So direct your energy towards some research, and find out what people are looking for. Spend time doing keyword research, and then start writing on topic that have the potential to become evergreen, or to live for a longer time, because people are looking for such stuff. It's all about the consideration and implementation really. Advice is nothing if interpreted correctly. Learn to do so, and you'll have your chance to become a pro blogger. All the best :)

0 Top 10 Tools To Search Twitter For Popular Bloggers

Twitter Research
Twitter is a really great tool when it comes to looking up for news or getting updates from your favorite Twitterers. For bloggers, it's an especially good way to build interactions, and get ideas. In our blogging tips, we have countlessly discussed about following other blogs in your niche tio find out what's hot, and what they are doing. This gives you ideas to improve your own blog. Here are some tools that we believe could be invaluable to searchers looking for updates and ideas on Twitter.

1. Twitter Research

Twitter research should be the very first thing you do when searching for people to follow. Hashtags are a really smart way of finding information. People use hashtags to monitor conversations, and get their tweets listed in results. This also makes tweets publicly available easily. When you search for hashtags, you will get results from bloggers and other people who are interested in your niche. But mostly, you'll find bloggers. And the top bloggers in your niche are usually the ones talking about the niche often. Take a look at what comes up, and follow the people you think have a substantial following.

0 Important cPanel Settings For Beginner Webmasters

cPanel
CPanel has become a very popular web hosting platform / software, and once you migrate to your own domain or buy a new one, your hosting company will most likely provide you with the cPanel software pre-installed on your domain for your ease. In fact, it has now become the industry standard for hosting companies. For those of you who are acquainted with web-hosting, you will know how important such a software can be. It puts a lot of tools and features at your finger tips, thus allowing you to stop worrying about the management and concentrate on the domain itself. But for beginners, especially those who have no prior web-hosting experience, it could be a challenging and confusing environment. Here are some basic settings every beginner should set to ensure his domain is safe and secure.

Create a strong password

The first thing you should do when assigned a cPanel access is to set up a strong password. Now this is a bit obvious, but this step is more important than you think. There have been numerous complains regarding cPanel hacks, mostly because of the default passwords that were never changed. Once you lose your cPanel password, it's really hard to get it back, and you have to contact the web hosting company for a retrieval. And if it comes to the worst, the hacker might even get into your billing information, and steal your credit card number (full or partial) for future use when requesting password resets with the company.

Create strong password

Mostly, the default passwords assigned are the same for stuff like cPanel login, email, billing account, and so on. Change all of them and use strong passwords to ensure your own security. You can change your cPanel password from Preferences >> Change Password.

Get rid of spam

Once your domain becomes a bit popular, you will get tonnes of spam mails from rogue email addresses. So your next step should be to enable Spam Assassin, as it will take care of some spam for you. You can find this in cPanel >> Mail >> Spam Assassin.

Also set up a Discard message when an email is sent on your domain to a non-existent email address. You can do this by going into Mail >> Forwarders >> Add Forwarder. Click on Discard with Error to Sender, and click on Add Forwarder. If you don't set up this option, all the emails sent on non-existent email addresses on your domain will be sent to a default address.

Server interface

Just like checking out specs for a new computer, it's important that you check out the specifications for the web server your site is hosted on. You can see some information on the left sidebar of your cPanel. You might need to scroll down a bit. There, you will see the Account information, and Statistics. Keep an eye on these statistics, because you might be in trouble if you exhaust any limit. You can check CPU and memory usage, along with graphs to see what time your site gets loaded, and how much.

(Note: These stats show data for a new and inactive domain. An in-service website will use up more resources, such as CPU and Memory usage).

Monitor

Another useful setting is to update your contact info, and add a secondary email to get notifications and alerts. You can do this from Preferences >> Update Contact Info. This is an emergency email, in case you lose your primary email address. Notifications will be sent to this email address as well.

Depending upon your hosting company, you can get monitoring tools that also notify you when you are reaching your limits, or when your site goes down, and so on. Such data is valuable to a webmaster.

Getting set up with cPanel is the major step. But after that, there's no rocket science involved. You can easily learn along the way. Just make sure you don't meddle with your databases and stuff and delete them accidentally (lesson hard learnt =/). Just keep to yourself, and explore the features that are at your disposal. Cheers :)

0 Add Enhanced AddThis Sharing Tool To Your Blog

AddThis Social Sharing Tool
You might know AddThis from thesharing buttons you place on your blogs below your posts. The AddThis sharing tool is a really useful feature for bloggers. Not only does it provide you with a means to share your great content, it also monitors the information shared to analyze data and provide insights to publishers and note the latest trends. In the process, the AddThis sharing tool has evolved into a much faster and more powerful one which not only can easily be integrated with your website, it also provides a great and easy sharing experience to your readers. AddThis has recently released a sleeker, more elegant sharing tool which adds a lot of new features. Let's take a look at what's new, and how to get it!

What's new?

The most obvious change is the design. The sharing buttons look better, the compact menu is more streamlined, and the email form has a new look. In addition, the drop-downs make use of HTML 5 and JQuery, and load faster and are better optimized. Sharing from expanded menus has become faster as well. According to AddThis, the enhanced design has increased sharing by as much as 11%!

Then there is the great new on-page sharing feature. Normally, to share something, you have to open up a new window, and then click on the share/post button. This costs an extra page-load, which makes the process slower. The new AddThis sharing options provides you with the 'instant' inline sharing feature. Now, users no longer have to leave your page to share your content, as it can be done right from the AddThis buttons! This will be possible if users are logged into AddThis. And once they are, they will be able to easily share content (staying on the same page) on OTHER sites as well that use AddThis.

AddThis also makes sharing on Pinterest really easy. Simply put AddThis to any page on your site, and your users will automatically be able to see all the images on that page in a light-box gallery view to choose from easily, and pin to Pinterest. Simple, and effective!

Adding the AddThis sharing tool

Adding this functionality to your site is really easy! Just visit the Sharing button page, and choose the type of buttons you want. You can choose from among seven different styles, which you can live preview on the page. You can also go for plug-in based tools for WordPress and Blogger etc. Otherwise, you will just see some code, which you can copy and paste to your site wherever you want and the sharing buttons will appear there. I'd recommend going for plugins plugins if available, but it's totally up to you.

This is a great tool that you must try out on your blog. It's really fast, and analysis shows that it increases social sharing activity by as much as 11%, and up to 20% for Twitter. This is because it's more user-friendly, and doesn't inconvenience your users, who otherwise need to open separate windows and click multiple times. AddThis is easy to implement, easy to use, and provides an easy sharing option on your posts. That way, everyone goes home happy :)

That was a brief overview of the new service by AddThis. If you have questions, or are having problems, feel free to contact us anytime. We'd be glad to help. Peace :)

0 Is Blogging on a Celebrity a waste of time?

A Guest Post by Haider Afridi from SkFanClub. One of our most dedicated loyal reader and gold star contributor. Presenting his success story.

When a new blogger decides to start blogging, the first thing which hits his mind is " Which Topic Should I Blog on?". Than he startssearching for the topics which suites him well. Every topic is successful indeed but it depends on the blogger that how he executes his topic through Blogging. Today i will discuss about Celebrity Blogging. I will share my story with you. With my experience i will try to help you on how to make a successful Celebrity Blog.
When i started blogging on a celebrity exact one year back, some Pro-Bloggers advised me to leave celebrity blogging as a celebrity blog does not have much scope. Well i continue blogging. I admit that a Top Class Celebrity Blog can never be compared to a Top Class Tech Blog but it does not means that a Celebrity blog is a complete failure.

One year back when i was learning blogging i decided to start blogging of my own but i was confused on Topic. As i was not having much knowledge on Tech and Blogger Tricks so i decided not to step in the Tech Blogging. So after months of confusion, one day i decided to blog on the celebrity i like the most and it was Indian Mega Star Salman Khan. Now the question arises why i chose to do so ? Well the answer is quite simple. You can execute perfectly only than when you take deep interest in any work. As a die hard Salman Khan Fan, i decided to blog on him. But just being a die hard fan cannot make you a successful Celebrity Blogger. You have to follow the blogging Rules. The same rules which every blogger follows for success. There are advantages and disadvantages too of a Celebrity Blog which i will mention later in my article. First let me share with you what i have achieved in past one year with my blog:
  1. Facebook Fans ( Over 200K )
  2. Twitter ( Over 6K )
  3. RSS/E-mail Subscribers ( Over 4K )
  4. Decent Traffic ( Received 1 Million Pageviews This August : Stats verified by MBT)
So after looking at the above mention stats of SkFanClub, do you still believe that Celebrity Blogging is a waste of Time? If you talk about Earnings, i earn a decent amount of Money too.

How to Blog on a Celebrity?

Well this is something which must cleared to the newbie bloggers. Blogging on a Celebrity means to give the latest News Updates, Wallpapers, Videos, Movie Updates etc. The readers of your blog will be the Fans of the stars you are blogging on. For Example, I blog on Salman Khan so my readers are Salman Khan Fans.

How to Get News Updates of a Star?

As a n individual, obviously you have no direct source of News Updates of a celebrity but this is the best part of Celebrity Blogging. You do not have to panic on posts in fact posts will come to you. Follow Newspapers and Media Websites. Join Media Fan Pages on Facebook. But the best way to get Celebrity Updates is GOOGLE. Just go to Google and write the name of the celebrity you are blogging on. In my case it is Salman Khan. So this is how i search the news updates of him.

Simply i typed Salman Khan but not on the main page of Google. I searched in the NEWS TAB. You can see in the left side. Here you will get the Updates of the Celebrity from the Official Sources. Search up to 5 Pages for daily updates. It is so simple. Wallpapers and Videos you can get from the Media Fan Pages on Facebook and Twitter. For Example, if you blog on any Indian Celebrity, you must follow the Fan Pages of Business Of Cinema, Apun Ka Choice, Bollywood Hungama etc. Also you must follow the Bollywood Fan Pages too. Although many are not official pages but they can help you a lot.

How to post The News Updates?

Remember, don't copy paste the news exactly. Read the news updates and post them in your own words. Try to explain in better way for your readers. Sometimes it happens that there is no choice except to Copy Paste the news. Don't worry. It is totally legal but remember to give the full credits to the original news source and always write the copied news or statement in a Blockqoute as Google does not consider it Copied Content otherwise you and your blog have to face penalty from Google.

Create Uniqueness

Think for a while. When a reader can get the same news updates from other sources than why he should come to your blog ? This is where you have to work. Create uniqueness in your work. Try to publish the news updates as soon as possible. Try to update only the confirmed updates not the rumors as in Entertainment field, there are many rumors around every day.

Make yourself Socially Strong

This is another great part of Celebrity blogging. You can build a Strong Social Network. If 50 people visits a Tech blog, only 1 out of 50 will like the Social Pages of the blog but on the Celebrity blog, at least 10 out of 50 visitors will follow your Social Pages.
You can build a strong Page on Facebook. Here are some tips for you to increase Likes of Celebrity Fan Pages:
  1. Do not use your Facebook Page much for Traffic. Means do not share many links on Pages to get traffic.
  2. Share Pictures only because Fans Like, Comment and Share the Pictures of the celebrity.
  3. Post as much as you can. Try to post a Good Wallpaper of the celebrity after every 1-2 hours.
  4. Add the fans of the same celebrity on whom you are blogging in your personal Facebook profile.

If you follow these tips, you will indeed have a strong Social Network but Keep Patience ! You will not get thousands of Fans in one night. It will take months and years.

Do not stuck to one point only

Celebrity blog does not means that you only share news updates. This will not give you much traffic from Search Engines so try to add one alternative topic on your blog but choose the topic carefully so the fans should not get irritate. For Example, i share Box Office Updates of latest Bollywood movies along with Salman Khan. It gives me good traffic from Search Engines. But for the alternate topic you must have a good knowledge of it.

Final Words:

Follow the blogging rules and do not be biased towards your favorite star. Means if you love someone than don't post fake news and statements to degrade the arch rivals of your Star. Keep Patience and keep going on. Be active. Post the Updates as soon as possible. I just hope this brief post might have helped you to better understand how to run and maintain a blog on your favorite celebrity. Go start writing and build your own community of die hard fans for your James Bond. :)
Peace and blessings!

0 Now you can Create RSS FEEDS For Google Plus

Google Plus RSS Feed
As you might know, RSS Feeds are an alternative way of delivering your content to your readers. Not everyone that visited your site and liked your content will return again and again. Instead, you will have to deliver your content to them if they liked to your content, and say subscribed to your blog. They are, in fact, subscribing for your RSS feeds. These feeds will appear in their email inbox. Additionally, you can use your RSS feed to drive content on other sites of yours, or provide content to users on RSS readers. Feeds don't necessarily have to be from your blog. They can be from anything that's updated regularly, even your Google Plus. An engineer at Google developed a Chrome app, Feed+, that will allow you to create RSS feeds for your Google Plus!

Creating RSS feed for Google Plus

First of all, you need to add the Feed+ app to your Chrome. Do so by using the link given above. This useful app allows you to create Google Plus feeds for Pages as well as Profiles, hence giving you flexibility.

Once installed, open up Feed+, and it will ask you permissions to access some Google services that you are using. Accept them if you want to publish an RSS feed for your Google Plus page/profile. Now, you're set to publish your feed.

About the feed

The feed creation requires the app to be installed. But there's no processing involved on the client-side. All the feed conversions and publications happen on the cloud. You just need the Chrome app to manage the feeds, like deleting them of adding a new one. You can delete the feed from Feed+ menu. It's pretty simple!

The published feed is public, and anyone can subscribe to it, just like your regular FeedBurner feeds. Surprisingly though, FeedBurner doesn't recognize the feeds created from this service as valid, even though you can subscribe to it using any feed reader, such as Google Reader. Another problem, or rather, a short-coming of the app is, there's no option to create separate feeds for Circles. This is because Google Plus API's aren't very open-source about circles, and hence developers can't access their data.

But all-in-all, this is a great service. Once your feed is created, you can publish it to the world, and also use it to cross-share on multiple platforms automatically, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and so on. Refer to more of our posts about cross-sharing, and share this post to let more people know :)

0 Should You Blog In Hindi or Urdu?

Blogging in another language?

In the past few years, the worldwide aptitude towards blogging has been growing, and millions of blogs have now surfaced. Whether the purpose be to earn money or share opinions or educate people, one thing is for certain. Almost everyone (except for maybe a few personal blogs) is looking for audience to engage with on their blog. Now while communicating with these people, the communication medium needs to be taken into consideration. We have been reviewing some top bloggers and blogs in different countries, and we have gotten a better insight into how important language is for your blog. So the big question for tonight is, should you blog in Hindi, or Urdu, or any other traditional native language? And 'should you blog in English only?

The language barrier

Language is the most powerful communication method, and more so in written than in verbal communication. So if the other person can't understand the language you are talking (or writing) in, then your talk is just gibber-jabber to him. During our research on the top bloggers, we came across lots of blogs that were in the respective native languages. True, it made things difficult for us. But it made me think about how powerful language really is, and how much we take for granted when we come across a website or blog that's in a language we understand.

The Language Barrier
So what about those people who don't understand the blog's language? Well, to them, that blog's a dead-end, shut off for them probably for good. Hence, the reader will bounce. So in writing in a language unknown to a group of people means you're shutting them off, and not doing really good on the user-friendliness front.

The most spoken language is...?

Well, some might argue, that English is not the most spoken language in the world, with a share of just 5.52% according to population of speakers. Well, I think we can safely count out Chinese (Mandarin)  (with a share of 14.1%) because it's spoken majorly in China, and China wins on the basis of sheer number of people. Then is Spanish with 5.85% of the world's population speaking it.

Well, these demographics are a bit sketchy. These 'official' statistics take into account native speakers only. Looking at the bigger picture, English is spoken in over 137 countries, whereas Spanish, in contrast, is spoken in less than 30 countries. Hence, English might not be the most spoken language, but it sure is the most common, and the most widely-understood language in the world. Now i am sure most of you know the significance of shutting down your blog to such a large audience across a wide range of countries.

Looking at the top blogs.....

Our blog post about the top blogs in the U.S effectively includes some of the top blogs in the world, since the U.S is the world leader in the industry. Now, how many of these blogs are in English? All of them! Granted that English is the native language in the U.S. But these blogs are the world leaders, and have audience from almost every country. English has sort of become the standard nowadays, and good English is the mark of professionalism.

What about translators?

Hmm, interesting that you ask, because that's a good question. There are many translator services available, and I have one installed on my Chrome. But that's beyond the point. Suppose I have a great blog about technology (I wish :P), but it's in Urdu or Hindi or Chinese or whatever. Now what would the average English-speaking searcher write in Google? 'iPhone 5 specs' maybe, or 'windows 8 news'. Will my blog come up in the search results? Of course not! Translators are there just to assist the reader who's landed at your site. It won't bring in extra readers.

Translation tools
So if you're planning on running a new blog, run it in English. And if you already are running a blog in a native language, well, i won't tell you to quit, but I will tell you to consider making it multi-culturally accessible, and hope for the best. Good luck :)
